My ancestors would find it hilarious that mantou and bao, the steamed buns common to China for centuries, are now the fashionable thing to eat.
This one has an eggy coconut custard filling but for sweet ones you can use chocolate custard, lotus seed paste, red bean paste, fruit curds, jam, chunky poached fruit or even thick caramels like dulce de leche.
To take it one step further, you can deep fry mantou so they have a golden doughnut style crust.
